The San Floro Silk Museum is housed within the walls of the Caracciolo Castle, which dominates the Corace valley. The stones of the construction, dating back to 1400, jealously safeguard the relics of the Calabrian silk history, with the city of Catanzaro as a protagonist, considered between 1300 and 1700 as the European capital of silk. Historical costumes, damask catanzaresis, sacred vestments of damask and industrial textile archaeology are preserved in the first section of the Museum. In the second one there are contemporary raw silk artefacts, distinguished by crocheting work as well as old 4 heddles loom fabrics.

A third section is dedicated to mulberry, silkworm and natural fibres. One part is also reserved for natural dyes, with a rich assortment of silk samples coloured with poppy, Tropea onion, robies root, field daisy, St. John’s Wort, walnut husk, etc. Recently set up is the section dedicated to silk all over the world, with the exhibition of traditional fabrics and costumes from the countries which are closely linked to silk culture, such as France, Thailand and India. In the last section you can see by yourselves the looms, ancient and not so, on which the members of the Cooperativa Nido di Seta weave the precious artefacts even now. A wonderful interweaving of the past, the present and future.
